Microsoft: Running Scared

Were you to look at the news in the past couple days, you might be excused for thinking that we’d revved the DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour and jumped back to the good old days, when Microsoft and Apple were constantly at each others’ throats. Only this time, the positions are seemingly reversed: it’s Apple who’s flying high, and Microsoft who’s trying to play the part of the scrappy underdog.

Apple has gained a lot of traction over the past decade. The iPod pushed the company back into the mainstream, and Cupertino only continued gaining currency as Mac OS X matured and it released some of the slickest machines around. Add in Microsoft’s own problems dealing with Windows XP and its less-than-stellar successor, Vista, and Microsoft has started seeming like a non-entity these days.

Google’s recent announcement that it’s working on an OS–even though it won’t ship for at least a year–prompted numerous articles wondering about whether or not the vague foray by the search engine giant would be enough to topple the dwindling but still powerful Microsoft hegemony. Ten years ago, there was nobody with that kind of clout.

Microsoft has tried to strike back, but the company’s public relations machine has never been quite on par with Apple’s, at least when it comes to style and creativity. A daring first attempt at an advertising series featuring Bill Gates and comedian Jerry Seinfeld was amusing, but many viewers were more perplexed than intrigued, and the series lasted a mere two spots. Subsequently, Microsoft tried to co-opt Apple’s popular “I’m a Mac” ad series with several “I’m a PC” spots, but the result was even more eyebrow-raising, as it mainly served to confer a degree of legitimacy on Apple’s original commercials.

That led us directly to into the realm of Microsoft’s Laptop Hunters series, in which mere mortals–people like you and me! Well, except when they’re actors–are told that if they can find a computer underneath a certain price ceiling, Microsoft will buy it for them. The ads themselves were clear shots at Apple, whose products have a history of commanding a price premium over their PC counterparts. In most of the spots, Macs are derided as being underpowered and more expensive.

That’s three major strategies in a matter of months, which gives the impression of Microsoft throwing spitballs at a wall until one of them sticks. So far, Laptop Hunters has been the most successful for Microsoft, spawning half a dozen different spots, and–according to Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner–even prompting a phone call from Apple’s legal department asking that Microsoft cease airing the ads, due to recent aggressive price cuts by Cupertino that rendered the commercials out of date.

That wasn’t the only shot Turner took at Apple in his recent presentation at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference; he also said that Microsoft would indeed be launching its own chain of retail stores this fall which, in many cases, will be located “right next door to Apple stores.” Redmond hired Wal-Mart veteran David Porter to head up its retail operations; Apple’s retail division, meanwhile, is headed by former Target executive Ron Johnson, which itself helps highlight some of the philosophical differences between Microsoft and Apple.

So why the sudden resurgence of hostilities between the two companies? Apple’s regularly issued a number of digs at its old enemy in the recent past and, more to the point, it’s really worked for the company, though you might argue that Microsoft has done plenty of damage to itself as well. In actively rebutting Apple, Microsoft clearly wants to show that it’s not going to take these criticisms lying down.

More to the point, I think Microsoft’s a little worried that it’s becoming irrelevant. Like the monolithic IBM before it, Microsoft is a victim of its own enormous success. And like IBM, Microsoft’s not in any danger of dying–let’s not forget the company still controls the majority of the OS market–but that position of the 800-pound gorilla has made it lazy, complacent, and vulnerable. Even its few-and-far-between attempts at innovation have been a little ridiculous–the expensive and impractical touch-sensitive Microsoft Surface, for example. And the forthcoming Windows 7 is an attempt to turn Vista into what it should have been from the start: a solid competitor to OS X and not much more.

These days, Microsoft products are often what people use because they have to, not because they want to. And while that was good enough in the days when computers were serious investments, the PC market has reached the point that consumers can usually easily hold out for the computer they really want.

By positioning itself as the challenger to Apple’s new anodized aluminum dominion, Microsoft is taking a play from Apple’s book–but it’s a hard and potentially disingenuous play to make when you still control upwards of 90 percent of the market. The biggest advantage Microsoft has is its ubiquity, but that just serves to make the company a bigger target, in the same way that the majority political party takes more flak because they’re in power.

After all, when you’re at the top, there’s nowhere to go but down.

What Will Apple’s Big Tablet Cost?

If Apple doesn’t introduce a tablet computer soon, we’ll all be sorely disappointed. With all the ongoing speculation about the alleged iPod-on-steroids, I feel like the device is already here.

Today’s scuttlebutt from Apple Insider has the Big Tablet arriving early next year, a prediction that matches one two months ago by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

So what do we know about the tablet? Reports say it’s an iPod-like device with a 10-inch screen, a handheld slate that’s large enough for HD movies, video gaming, and Web browsing without all the window-resizing and screen-tapping calisthenics that smartphone users endure. Apple Insider says the tablet will feature 3G broadband, which seems logical. And since we’re speculating here, I’d like to request Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and GPS as well.

Name Your Price
Specs aside, what should Apple charge for the Big Tablet? Some reports say $800 is likely, but that seems high for a consumer electronics device. My prediction: $499. Here’s why:
According to a 2007 study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the average American household spends about $1200 annually on electronics products. Would the typical household blow two-thirds of its tech budget on one handheld device? Probably not.
And that CEA study was two years ago — before the current recession and consumers’ belt-tightening ways. To me, $500 seems like the sweet spot for a premium consumer gadget.
And then there’s Apple’s product lineup. Currently, there’s a big gulf between the 32GB iPod touch ($399) and the $999 MacBook. Let’s assume Apple drops the iPod touch price, as it did recently with some of its MacBooks.  The Big Tablet would fill the void nicely at $499.
Of course, for Apple to achieve its desired profit margin, that $500 price tag may include a 3G service contract with a major wireless carrier. Given the enormous success of the iPhone, it wouldn’t be surprising if AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon would be willing to subsidize the tablet’s cost to sign up new subscribers. Netbooks with wireless-style plans are becoming increasing common, so the subsidized model for consumer hardware is already in place.
And, no, I didn’t call the Big Tablet a netbook. Apple would hate that.

In the previous year, notebook computer sales were up 114 percent, according to MAIT.About 5.3 million desktops were sold in the year, with notebook computers, including netbooks, accounting for 1.51 million units. The netbook, a new category of low-cost notebook computers, caught the fancy of consumers, MAIT said. Sales of netbooks crossed 70,000 in the fiscal year.MAIT is now forecasting growth of 7 percent to over 7.3 million units in the fiscal year to March 31, 2010. A revival in the market was already evident in the January to March quarter, MAIT said.Growth by 7 percent in the current fiscal year may not reflect a strong rebound in the market, because there were two bad quarters in the last fiscal year, according to some analysts.A return to strong double-digit growth is likely only in the third quarter of the next calendar year, Kapil Dev Singh, country manager at research firm IDC India said on Wednesday.

Netbook Shipments to Double This Year, Research Says

Netbook shipments will double this year, while mainstream laptop shipments will remain flat, research firm DisplaySearch said on Monday.

Netbook shipments this year could reach around 32.7 million units, propelled by competitive pricing and improved hardware capabilities. Shipments will be close to double that of 16.4 million netbooks that shipped last year, said John Jacobs, director of laptop research at DisplaySearch.

The latest estimate represents a hike on the company’s previous forecast of 27.5 million netbook shipments for the year.

Netbooks will also take a larger chunk of worldwide laptop shipments as mainstream laptop shipments flatten, Jacobs said. Worldwide mainstream laptop shipments will total 129.5 million, flat compared to last year.

Buyers are drawn to netbooks because of competitive pricing between US$300 to $500, Jacobs said. PC makers have also improved netbook hardware with larger screens and keyboards, which could further boost demand. The improvements were necessary as the cramped keyboards and small screens were resulting in many netbooks being returned, Jacobs said.

Some PC makers are also offering netbooks with better graphics capabilities, Jacobs said. For example, Lenovo recently introduced the IdeaPad S12 netbook, which has a 12-inch screen that can play full high-resolution movies with the optional Ion platform from Nvidia. The platform couples Nvidia’s GeForce 9400 graphics core with Intel’s Atom chip.

Companies like Apple previously dismissed netbooks, saying the small laptops had junky hardware and limited software capabilities.

Hardware improvements could blur the lines between netbooks and mainstream laptops in the future, Jacobs said. That could affect the shipment of laptops priced at around $800, he said. Lines could blur further when new ultrathin laptops priced between $500 and $800 make an impact, Jacobs said. PC makers recently started offering lightweight ultrathin laptops, which are more powerful than netbooks, but offer less performance than mainstream laptops.

Netbook shipments are getting a boost in developing countries, where buyers are adopting them as primary laptops. In developed countries, however, netbooks are viewed as secondary devices to mainstream laptops, Jacobs said.

Frozen IT budgets have also slowed down mainstream laptop shipments, though that may change in 2010 when customers look to upgrade their PCs to Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 OS. There is a lot of momentum behind Windows 7, but unlike mainstream laptops, users won’t buy netbooks specifically for the OS, Jacobs said. Microsoft has said it would offer a version of Windows 7 for netbooks.

DisplaySearch said that of the 32.7 million netbooks estimated to ship this year, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) will account for 13.1 million units. North America shipments will total 8.8 million, with Greater China totaling 3.9 million units. Shipments in Asia will touch 3.0 million, while Japan and Latin America will account for 1.9 million units each.

Netbook shipments for the second quarter of 2009 totaled 7.07 million, just shy of 100 percent year-over-year growth, Jacobs said.
